Book Feature: What Kids Should Know About Filipino Food

8 November 2019|

Other than food, what we love at Mama Sita’s Kitchen are books about, well, still food. So much so that in 2017, when we celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of our culinary (and life!) inspiration, Teresita Reyes, Mama Sita Foundation honored her through a special centennial edition of this fantastic book by Felice Prudente Sta. Maria.

The Special Mama Sita Centennial Edition of What Kids Should Know About Filipino Food launched at the Quezon City Public Library in 2017

This handy kid-friendly book is far from a heavy coffee table/high brow publication that you might imagine it to be. You’ll be impressed with how informative this thin book is, covering many things about our food’s uniqueness: our love for rice, various dipping sauces, folk tales, regional delicacies, street food, and many more. They’re all colorfully illustrated for the appreciation of kids and the kids at heart.

The difference of the special edition from the original is that it includes a couple of Mama Sita’s recipes and a cool illustration of her life in food.

Sta. Maria has written several books on food and its significance in our history, such as The Governor-General’s Kitchen, and The Foods of Rizal. She has a new book, this time in collaboration, with another great author, Bryan Koh.

At the Frankfurt Book Fair last month, The National Book Development Board (NBDB) of the Philippines featured this special edition of What Kids Should Know About Filipino Food. The main goal of NBDB’s participation in the book fair was to look for publishers who can promote and make the book available in different countries. Crossing our fingers for it to become available in your area soon!
